My Makeup Routine

Monday, April 18, 2016

I had to start this post off with a little humor because lets face it, none of us are getting any younger!

I'm actually older than Sally O'Malley and that I'm 54! {Gulp!}

But it is what it is! So why not try and make the best of it right?

I've had some requests from ladies who are my age as to what makeup I use since I wrote a post about my makeup obsession.

Let me start off by saying, that I don't proclaim to be an expert! And I'm in no means telling you that what I'm doing is right or perfect or what you should be doing. I'm just showing y'all what works for me and hey maybe you might find something that you like as well!

1. Derma e Hydrating Day Creme // I can't say this enough for the over 50…Okay for everyone! Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!! And NEVER go to bed with your makeup on! Oh the horror!

2. The POREfessional face primer by Benefit // Seriously, you wouldn't paint a wall without priming, right? Same concept!

3. Urban Decay Eyeshadow primer potion // Same concept as face primer, makes your shadow stay on for hours without creasing.

4. It Cosmetics Your skin But Better CC+ Full Coverage Cream // This stuff is the best! Covers, lasts all day and what I like is its buildable! I can use a little for day or build the coverage when I need it. And it has a SPF 50+

5. It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye // This stuff will cover any problem you have! Not just under your eyes! Blend out well with your fingertips or I like to use the beauty blender sponge.

6. It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Loose Powder // You might think this post is sponsored by It Cosmetics, it is not! I just love the stuff!! I use a big fluffy brush and lightly dip this and then shake off the excess and buff out my whole face so that everything is well blended and even.

7. DiorShow Brow Styler in Universal Brown // Now I know some might be appalled at paying $29 for an eyebrow styler but it is totally worth it! And I've had it for a year! I have skimpy brows and this fills them in so natural looking and I don't know what it is about that little brush on the end.. but its pure magic!

8. Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner in Black // I line the top lash line only and get it as close to the base as possible. Don't circle your entire eye with liquid eyeliner. Unless you want to look like Amy Winehouse!

9. Milani Baked Blush // I go between Dolce Pink and Luminoso which is a dupe for Nars Orgasm at a fraction of the price!

10. Mac Shroom Eyeshadow // I use this on my lid and brow bone. Nuff said!

11. Mac Mulch Eyeshadow //This is a great everyday brown. I use it on the crease and under my lower lashes.

12. It Cosmetics Hello Lashes // This is a great product as well! Good staying power, doesn't flake off!

13. Laura Geller Baked Highlighter in Portofino/French Vanilla // I use this in so many places, I could do a post on it alone! But mainly I use it on my cheekbones, down the center of my nose and chin and the inner corners of my eyes.

14. NYX Liquid Suede in Tea and Cookies // This is the flavor of the month or should I say week! Seriously I have so many lipsticks, lip glosses, stains, pencils its crazy! This is a pretty color and its  very universal so I think a lot of people could wear it. It just needs a gloss over it. But maybe thats just me!

15. NYX Butter Gloss in Eclair // And this is what I put over it! This looks pretty over the Tea and Cookies and gives it a little moisture.

Things I've learned since turning 50!
(About makeup and skincare, not life)
***********************************************
Take care of your skin! Clean, exfoliate, moisturize

Dark lipsticks are a no no! Too harsh!

Dark lipliner is also no good!

Heavy foundation looks bad when we start having wrinkles! It settles into them and is not a good look.

Heavy eyeliner is also not flattering as we age. Remember soften!

Lipstick and sunglasses will get you far too!

I hope you enjoyed this post on my routine!

Back Porch Refresh For Spring!

Thursday, April 7, 2016

Hello lovelies!

I don't know about you but nothing tells me that has Spring has sprung like a big mouthful of pollen!

Which means that everything and I mean everything is coated in nasty, yellow pollen dust!

But we must suffer through this nastiness in order to get to the beauty of Spring and Summer!

***********************************
First thing I did was scrub everything with a bucket of sudsy water and a brush!
Then we scrubbed the pavers too!
Now on to decorating
***********************************

Last year I added pops of green with the navy blue cushions, but this year I wanted to stay more classic!

So I opted to go with a navy/white combo.

I also wanted more of a coastal feel so with a few added touches I think I achieved it!

After a very frustrating order from Overstock, I finally received my navy/white stripe rug! I think it took something like 3 weeks to get here! But it was worth the wait! Now to try and keep the white clean! Yikes!

I had this fish picture that I purchased a couple of years ago. It was hidden in the back hallway so I brought it out! I'm pretty sure I got this at Homegoods a few years ago. But I love how it ties in all the colors.

I have a thing now for blue and white ceramic pieces! I like this out here, but I'm a little scared that it might get broken so its back in the house! I picked this up from Amazon of all places!

I had the coral pillows from a few years ago too! And although its hard to see, the fish has some orange in it too. I went back and forth on whether to have a coffee table or not! I know, I have hard decisions in my life, right?

But ultimately I decided on this bamboo like table from Pier One. Its actually metal, which will stand up well to the elements. Although its a very protected space.

I ordered this outdoor chandelier from Magnolia Market and I bought outdoor electric candles from Pottery Barn that go on automatically every night. It looks so pretty and romantic!

And I'm pretty sure I showed this World Market potting bench turned bar before. But we still love it! It came in handy at Easter. I placed everything drink related, even ice out here!
No mess!!
Basil and tomatoes have been planted!!

I hope you enjoyed my back porch Spring tour!

Weekend Project-Board and Batten

Monday, April 4, 2016

Happy Monday!

Just a quick post to follow up on my idea of adding shiplap or board and batten to my entryway.

If you'd like to read my post on shiplap and board and batten click here.

We decided on the board and batten, because:

1. Board and batten is throughout the rest of the house so I think it gives the space a cohesive look.

2. I was concerned because of its popularity it would look outdated SOON!

So here's the before:

And although it looked nice, it just needed something!

It took my husband really an afternoon and a lot of sweet tea (not even a full day) to complete this project.

I snapped a few progress pics too!

This is with one coat of Benjamin Moores White Dove. In total it took 3 coats.

He had to lower it a bit from the dining room because of the dang light switch!

And tah-dah here's the after! We couldn't be happier with it!

I haven't totally decided on how I want to style it yet. I just moved around what I had for now.

I feel that the wall looks grounded now and not just floating. And anytime you add architectural interest to a room, its a win win!

As far a decorating goes…

I've been looking at some entryway benches like these, which could actually double as extra dining room seating!

I love when I have a new area to decorate!

Oh and I almost forgot...

I still love shiplap and don't be surprised if I cave and it shows up somewhere!

Have a great day!

The Sofa Story!

Saturday, April 2, 2016

If you remember a few posts back I said there was a sofa story!

Of course there is!

Its me!

First let me tell you a little about me!

When I decorate, I decorate fast!

Which in some cases can be good, but in some cases it can be bad…very bad!

I make fast decisions and I know what I want.

That makes for fast shopping trips and I'm in and out of stores.

Move it people! I've got things to do and people to see! Lol Well not really, but in this case it was fast and I made a bad decision.

There hasn't been a lot of them but this one was bad…

One afternoon we went just "looking" at sofas at Ethan Allen. Yeah right! Who are we trying to fool…just looking!

 It. Has. Never. Happened!

I knew exactly the sofa that I wanted to look at, the Chadwick. And it is a stunner! A completely tufted back (no loose back cushions to get scrunched down!) Rolled arms, and nail head trim.

I was in love at first sight!

I picked out a beautiful gray linen that looked like it was nice and durable. Okay so far so good. No bad decisions here!

We sat on it. Key word "sat on it." We did not lay down on it.

Big no no!

We waited the 8 weeks for it to come, and it actually arrived 2 weeks early!

Happy dance!

They brought the beauty in, okay the color and fabric looked beautiful with the rest of my room.

I sat down on it. Good. It sat well. We're all good there…

Then that night I was all set to snuggle in for a night of Netflix binge watching and what happened next?

 Total discomfort!

It was hard, too narrow (okay no fat jokes!) and well basically,

THE MOST UNCOMFORTABLE SOFA I'VE EVER LAID ON!!

HOLY CRAP!!!

Now mind you this sofa is from Ethan Allen, so it was not cheap!

And it wasn't just me that thought this. My husband took his turn at laying down. He had to lay his right arm down on the floor.

This was not a snugly kind of sofa.  And I'm a snuggle in, lay down to watch TV kind of person.

I don't blame the sofa or Ethan Allen. Its just the kind of sofa that it is! It's for a formal living room where you might entertain with wine and hors d'oeuvres.

But we thought we would give it a good college try!

We lived with it for a while and after a couple of phone calls to our Ethan Allen store and dealing with a wonderful and helpful manager. We worked out a deal to return it and pick out something new, and comfortable.

So back to the store we went!

We ended up picking out this sofa. Its the Hyde sofa. And one of the things that I thought I didn't want in the beginning was loose back cushions. But I've come to realize that having loose back cushions buys you at least 2-3 inches when you remove them and makes for a very roomy sofa.

And I will say that this time we sat on it, laid on it (for about an hour) we were starting to get some looks and did everything except binge watch a Netflix series on it!

It will arrive in the next couple of weeks and I can't wait for that day!

For now I've rearranged the living room to accommodate no sofa and I have to say it looks good. Very open.

Hmm maybe we don't even need a sofa!

Nah, like I said before I'm a snuggle in, lay down kind of a girl!

And there you have it…The sofa story!
