I'm In A Coastal State Of Mind!

Sunday, March 30, 2014

So this week we're staying over at the beach for some much needed R & R!

Yesterday, our first day was raining, but today when we woke up it was clear and beautiful!

I'm writing this looking at the beach and thinking how much I love the beach and it's giving me some coastal inspiration!

I look out at all the colors that I see and there are whites, creams, blues, greens all blended in perfect harmony.

So I thought I'd share some pictures of what I'm seeing in home decor. So even though you're not here with me you can share in the same feeling.
My view!!

This is how I interpret the picture above in to home decor...blues that melt into green and touched by white and creams! Ahh!!

This shelf displaying white ginger jars and treasures from the beach is a beautiful sight in this foyer. With the worn, chippy brackets that add to the casual, coastal feel.

Also, how about that bead board?

And then there is that quintessential beach house that I have been OBSESSED with for years...The "Somethings Gotta Give" movie house!

These pictures don't even do it justice! It is my all time favorite movie house! And from what I understand I'm not alone in this obsession!

This is my dream kitchen without a doubt!

There's a scene in the movie where Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson are dining with 2 others and it's one of my favorite scenes. I'm not kidding I pause the movie, study the picture and rewind it like 3 times!
Sicko!

For more coastal inspiration rent the movie and you'll see what I mean! Plus it's a pretty cute movie!

I feel myself frying, time to put on more sunscreen!!

Hope your week is fabulous!!

Small Spruce Ups With Spray Paint!

Tuesday, March 25, 2014

I have never proclaimed to be a huge DIY'ER, and I'm so envious of all those talented people out there who are doing some amazing projects!

My husband always asks how can I have more paint on me, then the project I'm working on?
I'm a very messy painter!

But I do try! Hey A for effort, right?

But I do small projects, and I just did the new front door!
With the help of some manly muscle!

Maybe there's hope for me yet?

So I attempted a couple of little projects that in the big DIY'ER world is pitiful I know.
But, I wanted to bring in a little Easter and Spring.

Here's this metal rabbit that I had that was black and boring, so I decided to spray paint him a glossy white and spray his ears a bright gold to liven him up!
Sorry for the picture quality, it was taken from my phone.
And here he is after:

It's funny how a little spray paint can make something seem new!

Of course I still bought something new to go along with him, the seagrass tray is from Target.  I also made a little open faced terrarium  I recently picked up at Michael's. If you want more info on making terrariums here's a simple step by step by West Elm
The Peony and Daisy botanical pillows are from Pottery Barn. They're indoor/outdoor pillows, and one thing I learned is their outdoor pillows come with a pillow insert already.
Interesting!
I love their Spring colors!

Then I had this brown, wooden tray so I continued the white/gold theme by spraying it too. I first sprayed it white, then I used frog tape to tape a stripe down the middle and sprayed that and the handles gold.
Looks great with my gold leaf lamp.

So that's my little DIY projects for the moment!
Simple but effective, which is all I was looking for!
Have a great day!

Giuliana And Bill Rancic's Amazing Home!

Monday, March 24, 2014

If I've never mentioned this little tid- bit about myself, let me just tell you now...I love celebrities and celebrity news!

I love to hear about their lives, their loves, their fashion, and mostly about their homes!

I know call me shallow, I don't care!

When I start talking about them, my oldest son always has to remind me that I don't REALLY know them! And I'm not personal friends with them!

Hey I can dream that they're my friends right?

And if I'm their friends then it would only seem right that I'm invited over to their fabulous houses to hang out!

See how it works in my mind?

Now one celebrity couple's home that I'm obsessed with is Giuliana and Bill Rancic.

She's an "E" News co-anchor and style critic on Fashion Police, and Bill is a past winner of Donald Trump's show "The Apprentice" and now developer and speaker.

They moved into this fabulous house in Los Angeles in the Brentwood neighborhood
where they live with their 18 month old son, Duke.

Working with interior designer, Lonni Paul they envisioned a home with a calming, serene palette.

Are you liking the neutral color palette or do you enjoy more color?

This is where I got the idea for my K & M shown here

I think these glass lamps are spectacular and so unique looking on this hand carved sofa table from Hickory Chair.
This room is decorated in a classic blue and white.

I think I need some poufs too!

I would love to have the Jonathan Adler letter pillows but at $125 a pop, I think not. Here's the link if you might be interested. Jonathan Adler

And just know that if you get them...I will be jealous!

The nursery with it's blue grass cloth walls and water theme, keeps with their vision of calm and serene.
The striking chevron rug by Jonathan Adler adds a pop to the room!

I also love that Duke's room is not so cute-sie! His initials are carved into the front of the custom crib that Lonni Paul designed for him. It really personalizes his room.
Lucky boy!

All I can say here is, "Oh my!"

I hope you enjoyed the home tour today, I wish I could say that it's as beautiful in person as in pictures.

But only in my dreams!

Make it a great day! :)

Five For Friday-Part 4

Friday, March 21, 2014

Another week has rolled by...it seems the older I get the faster the weeks roll by!

That was depressing, right? I'm kidding I'm still young at heart!

But it is already Spring! It seems like it was just Christmas!

So I'm doing my last week of Five For Friday posts. I hope they've been helpful and you've tried some new trends in your home.

Even if it's just something small!

I've been working on my porch getting it ready with some new accessories, and some before and afters too. I'll be posting about that soon. So check back often!

So on with the last Five!

1. Brass And Wood Together:
Brass is definitely making a comeback. I know a lot of people love brass, but for me it just reminds of the 1970's!
But pairing it with a natural element like wood, gives it an updated, more organic and less "Boogie Nights" feel.

2. Agate:
These natural stones are sparkling and colorful. Just a simple piece will put you on the style trend.
Maybe some pretty coasters like the ones below. Or bookends on a mantle or bookshelf will give your room that spark of interesting!

3. Adventurous, Better Mirrors:
I know some of you are like mirrors? What is so 2014 about that? But I'm talking about bold, unique, adventurous mirrors! You know the ones that make people stop and say, "WOW!"

4. A Touch of Yellow:
Hello Sunshine!! I have to say my fascination with yellow is bubbling over right now! Maybe because it's Spring and I already feel a desperate need to "lighten up" my house!
But, doesn't yellow just make you feel happy?
Cue, Pharrell and my now most loved song...Happy!

5. Gold Leafing:
Gold leafing is showing up everywhere! It's all over Pinterest, people are DIY'ing with gold leaf and making beautiful, bright little treasures!
Sometimes it takes me a while to get on board a train with new design trends, and I feel like I just start getting on board with them and they're gone! Oh well!
I was always a silver girl...
But, I've got me some gold leaf! (Intentional bad grammar!)
So I feel like I'm ahead of the game!
This lamp is from Target, and gold leaf is all over their store, so it won't be hard to find.

So again, I hope you've enjoyed my Five For Friday series! It's been fun seeing what's out there and on trend right now.

And even though my little series is over, rest assured when I hear of something new, you'll be the first to know!
We're tight like that!
Enjoy your weekend, and make it a good one!

Spring-ifying My Front Porch With A Yellow Door

Thursday, March 20, 2014

I did it!

Finally after I don't know how long I painted my front door Yellow!!

And I'm so happy I did!

I mean I tell people all the time...it's just paint!

But, there was just something about painting it that I just wasn't sure of!

I really don't know what I was afraid of! I've Pinned Yellow Front Doors forever, I even have a board on Pinterest of yellow front doors!

What a baby!

So here's a before shot...

First coat was scary!

After 1 coat of tinted primer and 3 coats of paint...Finished!

The color I used is Beeswax from Sherwin Williams in a gloss.
There are 2 versions of Beeswax I used the older one that's not on a paint chip. The newer version is more gold.

Now I feel like you have clear idea of where the front door is. I always felt that the black door was just a dark hole!

I also added some new pillows of bright green and yellow chevron to tie it all in.
My plant situation is not where I want it to be right now. But, Spring is officially here today, so I'll be getting on that!

So that's it, My little rays of sunshine!
Have a great day!!

My Families Best Yellow Rice And Chicken!

Wednesday, March 19, 2014

Now I don't mean to brag. But, my family makes the most delicious Yellow Rice And Chicken in the world!

Can I say that? Well, I did!

This dish has been around our dinner table for years, and here's the proof!

This is my Grandma's original recipe written in her handwriting (This is what I cherish the most, that it's in her handwriting) for Arroz Con Pollo, Chicken and Yellow Rice!

Don't worry you're not going to have to follow this for the recipe!
The recipe is at the end of the post...

Now as you can see it has all the markings of a great recipe...stains!
That's when you know a recipe has been used hundreds of times, the mark of excellence!!
***** stars!
The original recipe came from a Tampa restaurant Las Novedades. Las Novedades Spanish restaurant had its beginning in 1890 when Manuel (Canuto) Menendez opened the first Spanish restaurant in what is now known as Ybor City.
Originally it was a great competitor to the world renowned Columbia Restaurant.

And here are the real deal pictures!

This recipe is also easy, but makes a beautiful presentation for guests. Who think you slaved over the stove for hours!

Now there are two (2) things I need to point out. 1.) I only... only use Uncle Ben's Long Grain white rice! No other brand, because other (cheaper brands) of rice make it too gummy and mushy. Not a good look!
2.) I realize that in other parts of the country you might not be able to get the Vigo Seasoning, which is what we use. The original recipe calls for 1 pinch of saffron. Here is the link to Vigo-Alessi Products
They're only showing that they carry the saffron though.

If you would like to read a previous post about my Grandma (Memaw) you can read about her here.

I hope you'll try this recipe for your family one night, because I know it will become a family favorite!
************************************************
Ingredients:
4 Bone in Chicken Breasts (I only used 2)
EVOO
1 Medium Onion, finely chopped
1 Medium Green Pepper, finely chopped
1 Can Diced Tomatoes, undrained
2 Cups Long Grain Rice
4 Cups Water
1 Package Chorizo Sausage, sliced
2 Packages Vigo Seasoning or 1 Pinch Saffron
2 Tablespoon Salt
 1 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
2 Bay Leaves
Baby peas for garnish (optional)
Pimento for garnish (optional)

Wash and dry chicken. In a large skillet, heat oil and sauté chicken until just golden. Add green pepper, and onion. Sauté until transparent. Stir in all remaining ingredients except the rice. Boil for 5 mins. (Very important to let it boil)
Add rice. Stirring to distribute evenly in casserole.
Cover and cook for 20-30 minutes or until water is absorbed, at 350.
Allow to stand for 15 minutes before serving
Garnish with peas and pimento!

The recipe has been modified through the years, but I guarantee you'll LOVE IT!
Also, the amounts can be doubled for company!
Enjoy!!
