My Favorite Projects of 2014

Tuesday, December 30, 2014

Happy 2015 everyone! I'm a little premature but as tomorrow night it's here!!
I've enjoyed a little break from blogging, although I really did miss it! I missed you too!  But I really enjoyed being with my family and of course my husband who takes off 2 weeks during the Christmas season.

But time to get back to work.
My mind has been swirling since I took all my Christmas decor down, and packed away!
I feel like the house is a blank slate and I'm ready for some new projects of 2015.
One huge project that MIGHT I say MIGHT take place is we are thinking of making the office into a dining room!

What? Have I had too much eggnog and fruitcake, possibly. But here's where I'm going with this.
My living room is an L-shaped room. With a dining room in the smaller part of the L. If you have an L-shaped room you know the challenges it presents.  As our family changes and our needs change I've realized that I need more living room space and a larger dining area.  Because instead of our family getting smaller with kids moving out, it's actually expanding!
More on that later!  Which is a good thing! No a GREAT thing! I'll have a separate post (with pics) on all the details, but we have BIG plans for this space and I'll be excited to share it with you!!

For now I thought I would start the new year with a look back on 2014 and some of my very favorite projects! Some of these seem like so long ago and I'm ready to redo the redo!  It's hard to believe that they were just this past year.

New Pavered Driveway Post…Finally!!

Monday, December 15, 2014

I know this post is a long time coming! I'm so sorry! I've had a lot of you wanting to see the final results of our new pavered driveway. So today is the day! Time just got away from me with the Christmas Home Tour and decorating for that.

In case you don't remember what it looked like here's a few before shots...

It was always a mess at the end of the driveway with mud and standing water. UGH!!

I always hated how narrow the walkway was to the front door. So we had them widen it and I love how it looks! It's crazy how such a simple change can make all the difference in the world!

And here is the AFTER!!

No standing water or mud!

You can see in this picture how the sidewalk is widened and looks more welcoming!!

Here's an up close picture of the color and pattern. It's sort of a gray with brownish colors throughout. It matches the existing porch pretty well.

So there you have it! Finally!!

Mike's Favorite Dutch Apple Pie With Oatmeal Streusel Topping

Sunday, December 14, 2014

I hate to break it to you, but it's Monday! We had a good weekend, very relaxing. Mike had Friday off and we literally did not leave the house the entire 3 days! We grilled out Saturday night. We served up steaks, baked potatoes, blue cheese wedge salads and for dessert Apple Pie. No wait. It should be APPLE PIE!!!!

This is by far the best apple pie I've ever had! My husband Mike's reaction to this pie was priceless! I really wish I had it on video! He says and I quote, "This is the best apple pie I've EVER had in my life!"

And trust me there's been a lot of pie in that pie hole!!
So I wanted to share this with you, and with the holidays coming up it would make a great dessert to have for your family get togethers or to take to a holiday party!

Dutch Apple Pie With Oatmeal Streusel Topping
(Recipe at end of post)
I used 6 large Granny Smith apples. These things were huge. This picture is after I used 2 of them! The best part of this pie is the lemon zest in the topping! That just sends it over the top!

Peel and core the apples. I sliced them thin, which I think allows the flavors to penetrate the apple slices.

Next mix flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and here's the kicker I added pumpkin pie spice!! Toss with apples till all of them are coated with this yummy mixture!

Spray a deep pie pan with vegetable spray and press one ready made pie crust into bottom. Place in freezer. Mix together streusel topping.  Fill with apple mixture. Cut one 1/2 stick of butter in chunks and dot top with butter.

Cover loosely with foil and place in 425 degree oven for 10 mins. While baking mix up the streusel topping.

Combine flour, cinnamon, brown sugar, oats and the zest of 1 whole lemon. Mix well and then cut in 1 stick of butter until crumbly. I ended up just using my clean hands. When pie comes out of the oven pat streusel topping on top. Bake for 1 hour or until pie is bubbly and golden brown on top!

Mike had it for dessert last night and again for breakfast this morning served cold!

He stills says its the best pie he's ever eaten!!

1 9-inch ready made pie crust
6 large granny smith apples- peeled, cored and sliced thin
2 Tablespoons flour
2/3 Cup white sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/2 stick butter
Streusel Topping:
3/4 Cup flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 Cup brown sugar
1 Cup Oats
zest of 1 lemon
1 stick butter

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Spray deep pie pan with vegetable spray and pat out ready made pie crust into bottom of pan. Place crust into the freezer

1. Prepare filling. Place apples slices in large bowl. In separate bowl combine 2 Tablespoons flour, white sugar, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1 tsp. nutmeg, 1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice. Mix well, then add to apples. Toss until evenly coated.

2. Remove pie shell from freezer. Pour apples into pie shell and dot with 1/2 stick butter. Cover loosely but do not seal with foil.

3. Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes.

4. While pie is baking make streusel topping. In a medium bowl combine 3/4 Cup of flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, brown sugar, oats, and lemon zest. Mix thoroughly, then cut in 1 stick softened butter with fork or hands. Until mixture is crumbly. Remove pie from oven and pat topping on top.

5. Reduce heat to 375 degrees. Bake and additional 1 hour or until pie is bubbly and golden brown on top. Cover top loosely with foil to prevent excess browning.

Christmas 2014 Home Tour

Sunday, December 7, 2014

Welcome to The Daily Nest's Christmas 2014 home tour!
I'm so happy you're here!
Come on in and let's start the tour!

Here we are on the outside. And I have to say that I can't take any credit for the outside lighting! My husband Mike is the whiz at lighting! Everything is on timers and comes on and goes off like clock work. Thank you for the all the hard work to make our home beautiful!

I got this old sled years ago at an antique store. It's been displayed by our front door every Christmas for years.

Come on in sit down and relax. How about a nice cup of hot chocolate or coffee?

When you first step into my home this is what you'll see first. This is an Ethan Allen Bombay chest that  I've had for years now. A magnolia garland surrounds my new Egan mirror from Pottery Barn and gives off the best reflection!
The red tartan runner is actually well, not a runner. It's a throw that I bought from a store here in Tampa. So I thought why not just fold it in thirds and make it a runner! A little lantern filled with a topiary and flickering candles and of course a little boxwood wreath complete the entry table.

This is the living room. It's a very cozy and warm room. Perfect for snuggling up and watching T.V.

I placed tiny boxwood wreaths on both sides of the board and batten with a neutral chevron ribbon. Simple.

The sofa table is decorated with a big basket of wood, tree clippings and lights. Along with some oversized shiny ornaments.

I moved my leather ottoman out and moved this white ottoman in from the office to "lighten" up the room. I placed the ikea fur rug on top with a mirrored tray with some fresh tree clippings and lantern.

Red berries in a birch cylinder look festive on the T.V. console.

Of course there's my main man! My deer from Decor Steals watches over the room. But not in a creepy way! He's dressed for the occasion with some jingle bells and a boxwood wreath.

And here she is in all her glory! As I said before, "It's a beaut Clark, a real beaut!" Come on you know that movie!  (Christmas Vacation!)

The Dining room is set for Christmas guests. With silver chargers, sparkly gold ornaments and my paperwhites in the DIY brass bowls that I made. You can see the full tutorial here.

The backdrop to the dining table are these champagne glitter trees from Pottery Barn. It's like dining in an enchanted forest!

I placed boxwood wreaths on each side of the french doors to give the room some symmetry. These are beautiful and very lifelike from Save-On-Crafts.

Now we're in the heart of the home. The kitchen. Let me just say, I. Love. My. Kitchen! It got a complete over haul this year and you can see the whole transformation with this space here.

It's a very happy kitchen! Merry and Bright as I like to say. With splashes of red and white! The large window over looks the pool. And I have lots of counter space.

A milk and cookies/Hot chocolate station is ready for Christmas guests!

If you're new to my blog this is Buttercup! I love her!

The magnolia wreath is from Williams-Sonoma and the wire trellis is from a store here in Tampa, RareHues.

Now we've entered the master bedroom. I kept the mantel neutral so it has a relaxing element to it.

The fireplace gives it that warm Christmasy feeling all by itself.

There is nothing better than snuggling up in this bed in front of a roaring fire!

We painted the fireplace white and I love it! It really gives the room a clean, fresh, updated look. You can see how it looked before here.

The master bathroom's decor for Christmas was kept simple. Because I don't like a lot of clutter in the bathroom.

I found this white deer head at Homegoods. I just framed him with an empty frame added some bells and a boxwood wreath and I think he looks fantastic!

The bamboo ladder also got a wreath and deer hand towels.

Sydney, Mike and I wish you a Very Merry Christmas and the happiest of Holidays!!
Thanks for visiting my home tour!
Please come again!
