House journey

Wednesday, December 11, 2013

Hi everyone! I hope you all are enjoying the Christmas season, which is barreling down on us at the speed of light! It seems with Thanksgiving so late this year, that Christmas was upon us before we knew it! But, enough of my complaining! I wanted to give you all a little background of the journey that our little nest has taken over the last 27 yrs. we purchased this house in 1987, when our oldest son was just a baby. He will be 28 next yr.! With the intention that we would stay for a while and then move on. Well, here we are 27 yrs. later! But, all in all I still love this house. Not only is it filled with great memories of our kids growing up, but Mike and I have invested a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get it in the shape that you see it now! We purchased it from an older woman that was a very heavy smoker (cough, cough!) she smoked inside for most of her life. The house had good features that we knew we could overcome the negatives. It has a beautiful yard with Grandfather oaks on a large lot, and it was built by the builder in this area for his Mother, so everything as far as structure was upgraded. Luckily, my husband Mike is probably the most handy person in the world! I always say that if I'm stranded on a desert island, I would want to be with him. He can literally make and do anything! I mean Brad Pit would be great, but would he rescue us off the island? I'm thinking not! Anyway, back to my story. The house was in good shape it just need cosmetic things. We painted and worked on it day and night for a few weeks before we even moved in. Mostly cleaned like the dickens. The air vents we thought were gold, oh how nice we thought. Gold air vents (it was the 80's) turns out it was nicotine! Yuck! So after a few weeks we got it into shape with new carpets, freshly painted walls, new air vents, new peel and stick linoleum floors! Hey, I loved them and thought they looked like real parquet floors! What did I know I was 24! It was just a 2 bedroom, so when we found out I was pregnant with #2 we went straight from the doctors office to pull a permit for the master bedroom of our dreams! Mike worked day and night with me sitting in a lawn chair watching him work! Hey, I was pregnant remember! I was not milking it! In the end he built us what we have today a 22x18 room with fireplace! And there is not a night that goes by that I'm not thankful for my private sanctuary! It's been painted about 4 different colors and gone through it's own transformation, but for now I think we've got it right. In fact, we say every room has been done over at least 4 times over the years. I went through a lot fazes very rustic country for one with wood beams that Mike installed in the living room with cotton hanging overhead! I will try and pull up some old pictures to post later on so you all can really get the idea of this house journey! I will never say it's done! I mean what fun would that be! Take care!
